I got my first kart when I was about 12 years old. To support my hobby, I started a kart parts business out of our garage at about 15 years old, selling karts, parts, and doing engine work. I kept that going through the remainder of my school years. After I had been out of college a few years, I decided to go into the kart business full time. I didn't have enough local customers to support the business so I set myself to figuring out how to get more. I decided to do a wholesale mail order kart business. We published a big catalog and put out ads in all of the karting publications. I hit the road with my karts, racing all over the world advertising our parts along the way. Later we added a rental track on the property beside the kart shop. I ran that business until I won 6 National Championships and the FIA Karting World Championship in Le Mans France in 1978. In 1979 I began my career in NASCAR Winston Cup and shortly sold out my karting business. I was reintroduced to karting in 2005 and added another WKA National Championship in TAG road racing in 2007. I still have the kart that I won the World Championship with and 5 other vintage karts as well as 3 modern karts. I am having a ball working with and driving the karts again. There is no pressure and I'm doing this all for fun!
